About Doki Doki Literature Club

Welcome to Literature Club! (Where things are not exactly as they seem...)

On the surface, Doki Doki Literature Club! appears to be a suitable front for a joyful high school dating sim. Vibrant anime images, peppy music, and wonderfully lovely schoolgirls. But don’t let that smile fool you. Behind that lovely atmosphere lies one of the most dramatic turns in gaming history.

Meet Our Special Members

You’re a male high school student, coerced into the Literature Club by your childhood pal. Here you will spend your days peacefully, creating poetry, talking, and knowing four bright girls, each different in personality:

  • Sayori: Your childhood friend, constantly shining light and happiness yet hiding gloomy shadows inside her head.
  • Natsuki is little and spunky, with a deep enthusiasm for comics and baking, but is also stubborn.
  • Yuri. A meek, quiet young woman. She takes shelter within dense volumes, and she has interests that are… very unsettling.
  • Monika: The perfect club president. So confident and smart. She seems to have it all together, including secrets that are outside the realm of a computer game.

When the Rosy Mask Drops

The gameplay starts out very familiar: hear conversations, make decisions, and put words together to construct beautiful poems to impress the person you’re sweet on.

But if you dig further, things start to become weird. Visual defects are strange, the audio is garbled, and the plot takes a frightening turn. Doki Doki Literature Club actively breaks the fourth wall, directly engaging and psychologically manipulating the player. The game even requires messing around with system files on your computer to push the tale along. The real nightmare starts when the powerful club president, Monika, finds out that you exist and that she is just a character locked in a virtual world.

CONTENT WARNING

Doki Doki Literature Club is a game that has profound psychological terror despite its attractive appearance. The story goes into great depth about mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, obsession, and self-harm. This game is not for children or people sensitive to these issues.
