Verity is a psychological horror game expertly disguised as a surprisingly calm blocky universe. The gameplay at first feels more like a laid-back adventure.
Verity, an emoji friend, accompanies you on your journey as you search for resources and construct a shelter, ensuring a cheerful environment. But this naive mask doesn't take long to start showing cracks. Things get quite disturbing as inexplicable incidents, environmental signs, and increasingly intimate queries reveal a far darker story behind the behaviour of the emoji.
The journey is split into 12 short chapters, and dialogue options are the focus of every encounter. You go on, and the conversations become more and more awkward.
As the conversations get stranger, the setting moves away from its calm start. You have to look closely at the sandbox sections to see how the mood slowly changes into something unsettling:
Verity is basic in its inputs, but complex in its dialogue-heavy mystery:
Verity illustrates that genuine fear may come without the necessity of jump scares; a buddy who is a little too friendly and a really awkward chat can be more than enough to give you a lingering sense of dread.
